Ski resorts in the Massif Central
Most of the 13 ski resorts in the Massif Central are located in the Auvergne. The best known are Super Besse in the Massif du Sancy, or Super Lioran, which will let you ski and hurtle down the slopes of the Plomb du Cantal. These Massif Central ski resorts are great! It's so true, it's right there in the name! In the Massif Central, you'll also find a few lesser-known nuggets, such as Les Estables, close to the Mézenc plateau and not far from Le Puy en Velay. Among the resorts in the Massif Central, there are a few outside the Auvergne. There's Le Bleymard in Lozère, for example, through which Stevenson passed and which allows you to ski on Mont Lozère.
With snow becoming increasingly scarce, especially as the altitude of the ski area is generally not very high, these resorts are being forced to mutate and gradually redirect themselves towards activities other than skiing. They are nonetheless atypical and very appealing, particularly as their clientele is essentially local. You have more of a feeling of travelling than if you went to a ski factory in Savoie in the Alps!
The areas are admittedly fairly small but can have up to forty or so alpine ski runs. In general there are around ten. These are mainly blue runs due to the gentle gradient of the mountain. They're ideal for children just starting out. There's no point in going skiing in the 3 vallées in Savoie if they haven't yet got their snowflake or even their 1st star. You won't really get a return on a Savoie ski pass, whereas ski passes in the Massif Central are much more affordable. Especially as some resorts offer free pistes for beginners. The great thing about skiing is that you get to feel the thrill of the slopes from the very first day!
Who says small area, does not necessarily say that all the buildings are at the foot of the slopes. In fact, the ski resorts in the Massif Central are quite old and were built extensively close to the areas and not around them. So it's not unusual for distances to be greater than in the Alps; you can be 1km from the slopes with a shuttle bus that takes you to the foot of the ski lifts. The centre of the historic village is further away from the piste, which has usually been built higher up than the centre. The philosophy of these ski resorts is not really to ski all day but also to enjoy the charming Auvergne villages whose village centres are generally very charming.
These resorts offer downhill skiing and also cross-country skiing. Your stay this winter could be a mix of several disciplines: downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The Massif Central resorts are also ideal for learning the joys of ski touring: the climbs are not too steep and you are very often at an altitude where there is vegetation, fir trees and other conifers. So many disciplines that will make you love these holidays in the land of white gold!
The last thing that can be a sledgehammer argument for your family is that resorts in the Auvergne are generally very popular with grandparents. They don't get homesick for the mountains, the heart of the village is well-stocked, it's not too cold... These are all arguments in favour of a successful holiday with grandparents compared with other resorts in France. We don't forget anyone at Familytrip!
The destinations offered by Familytrip in the Massif Central
We offer many hotel clubs with half-board or full-board packages. The clubs are convenient for families as most of the time they offer to accompany and escort children to and from ski lessons. We also have holiday villages that work on the same principle, but where you have a rental where you can cook for yourself, which makes your winter sports holiday less expensive. Hotel clubs and holiday villages generally offer a children's club to take over from ski lessons. Skiing all day can be very tiring for your child and a warm club can be an ideal addition to their week.
Right next to the Puy Sancy, which rises to an altitude of 1886 metres, we have a holiday village where you'll find flats for 4 to 6 people. It's a little way from the slopes, just 1km away, but a free shuttle bus will take you there, and children can be accompanied to their lessons directly from the holiday village. Between the rental price, the practicality of the services on offer for families and the opinions of customers who have stayed there, you'll be won over by this offer.
A Super Lioran, commune of Saint Jacques des Blats, we offer as accommodation a holiday village is a little further from the slopes (2km away). Not only do you have a shuttle bus to take you to the slopes or the resort centre, but also, and more importantly, you'll find a lovely heated indoor swimming pool on site throughout the winter season. The on-site children's club caters for all ages from 3 months to 17 years! Teenagers can even join an all-ski club if they have obtained their 2nd star at ski school, so they can stay on the slopes all day long. As well as the children's club, this village also has a wellness area, which is sure to delight the whole family! The value for money is excellent!
Finally, we can also offer accommodation in a more traditional residence or hotel without a club for your family holidays in the Massif Central. Without any special services for your family, we have selected the residence or hotel for its location in relation to the ski area, its desire and its ability to welcome families.
