Tips for booking your family holidays in Brittany
Between land and sea, its départements offer a diverse and varied range of landscapes just as you'd imagine Breizh to be. Brittany is islands and towns, urban and natural, rural and coastal. The wild beaches of the Abers, the inland towpaths, the harbours of Cornouaille, the mist and legend of the Brocéliande forest, the cities encircled by proud ramparts. There are a thousand ways to approach it and let yourself be seduced, because don't be in any doubt: it's Brittany that's going to win your heart.
Landscapes made in Breizh... experience Brittany with your family
4 astonishing departments:
The Côtes-d'Armor, Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan make up one of France's most touristic regions. They boast a wealth of natural sites, particularly in Armor ("the seaside"): almost 2,500 km of coastline featuring wind-beaten dunes, sheer cliffs jutting out into the ocean, estuaries serving as refuges for fish, molluscs and birds, salt marshes... Inland, in Argoat ("near the woods"), moors, hedged farmland and forests create a variety of landscapes.
Ille-et-Vilaine is the gateway to Brittany. The département covers more than 6,500 km², but only 110 km of it stretches along the coast, from Saint-Briac-sur-Mer in the west to Roz-sur-Couesnon in the east. The department's highlights include Rennes, the capital of Brittany, Dinard, the seaside resort on the Emerald Coast, Saint-Malo, the city with the ramparts that was the starting point for the Route du Rhum, Cancale, the oyster capital, and the mythical Brocéliande forest, the setting for the legend of King Arthur.
The Brocéliande forest also extends into Morbihan. In this département, there's no need to choose between sea and countryside, beach or town - Morbihan is all these things and more. From the mysteries of Brocéliande to those of the menhirs of Carnac, from the liveliness of La Trinité-sur-Mer or Quiberon to that of the offshore islands of Belle-Ile-en-Mer, Houat, Hoëdic or Groix, the choice is difficult. Whichever destination you choose, Morbihan will never cease to amaze you.
Less than 2h15 from Rennes, Nantes and Paris, the Côtes d'Armor welcomes you on your holidays in Brittany. Admire the exceptional sites and the highest tides in Europe. The region's main tourist attraction is its seafront on the English Channel and its varied coastline, with numerous sandy beaches set between hills and cliffs. A variety of coasts await you: the Emerald Coast, the Goëlo Coast, the Pink Granite Coast... Discover the towns of Saint-Brieuc, Lannion and Dinan, or take a boat out to the island of Bréhat and explore it on foot or by bike. You'll discover a multitude of coves, beaches and shelters for lost sailors. If you want to discover the island, it's best to visit in spring or autumn, when there are fewer visitors.
Eager to discover the tip of Brittany? Head for Finistère. Try a kouign-amann in Douarnenez, go from Les Vieilles Charrues to the traditional Filets Bleus festival, try your hand at surfing in Cornouaille or hiking in the Monts d'Arrée, take a ride in the Brest cable car, admire the spire of Saint-Corentin cathedral in Quimper... Let yourself be won over by the soul of Finistère!
Brittany's culinary specialities...
France is the queen of gastronomy, and it's no surprise that Brittany is sure to satisfy the stomachs of the whole family! Of course, you'll be expecting buckwheat galettes and wheat crêpes, but don't let the clichés fool you: Breton gastronomy is also about fresh oysters and melting scallops, a divine crêpe with salted butter, the soft dough of the curé nantais, the crispness of the kouign-amann, a ripe Plougastel strawberry, a bowl of sparkling cider or a glass of chouchen, the Breton mead. There are plenty of Breton specialities to choose from, from starters to desserts, cheeses and drinks. One thing's for sure, travellers to Brittany are in for a treat.
And so, what language do we speak?
Since 2004, Breton and Gallo have been officially recognised, alongside French, as the languages of Brittany. Breton is a Celtic language belonging to the group of Brittonic languages still spoken today. Gallo is an Oïl language, spoken mainly in Haute-Bretagne, the eastern tip of the region. Don't worry, only 5.5% of the population speaks Breton, i.e. around 213,000 people in the 4 departments of Brittany. "Demat!" (Hello!), "Degemer mat!" (Welcome!), "Kenavo" (Goodbye!), "Trugarez" (Thank you)... Learning a few little Breton words can be a fun way to immerse yourself in the region's folklore.
