The Pyrenees a vast mountain range linking the Basque country to the village resort of Cerbère

The Pyrenees are a great big playground! It's the ideal place for your family holiday this summer. The Pyrenees stretch 430 km from east to west, up to 3400 metres in altitude, straddling France and Spain. This mountain range crosses no fewer than 5 départements (or even 6, some of which include the Aude, others not). From east to west there are the Pyrénées-Orientales, Ariège, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and finally the Pyrénées-Atlantiques (the French Basque country). In this vast area, you'll find vast expanses of mountains and nature, breathtaking scenery such as the Cirque de Gavarnie, lakes to cool off in summer such as Lac d'Aumar, and farms to visit as you hike through.

You'll pass through some of the most beautiful villages in France, typical of the Pyrenees. No fewer than 11 villages across the Pyrenees have been awarded this label. You'll find them in the Basque country: Sare and AInhoa. There are also villages in the heart of the Pyrenees, such as Saint Jean Pied de Port and Saint Bertrand de Comminges. And further east, you'll find the little village of Evol or Castelnou. Other towns, such as Saint Lary, a ski resort in winter, are transforming themselves and turning green for the summer. These towns and villages go out of their way to give you good information at the tourist offices and to organise activities for you.

The Pyrenees are a good destination for discovering Spain, whether you're heading for the Basque country or the other side in the Pyrénées Orientales. On both sides of the border, most people speak both languages. Locals regularly go there to buy tobacco, alcohol and petrol.

There's no shortage of things to do in the Pyrenees. There are plenty of walks, of course, but you can also take a guide with you to discover the Pyrenees off the beaten track. There are some areas where you can spend a night under the stars to enjoy nature. In our holiday villages, we offer 2 hikes a week, accompanied by a professional guide. There's no need to book this activity, there's no numerus clausus!

With its many peaks and rocky outcrops (pic du midi, pic d'issarbe or pic du Canigou), climbing can be enjoyed in the great outdoors. In the event of bad weather, climbing gyms have sprung up all over the place in recent years.

Almost all the resorts have developed water-based activities: everyone has their own swimming pool or water park, as the Pyrenees were historically spa resorts before they were ski resorts. Most of our destinations have a swimming pool, water park or play area.

Children won't be outdone by the multitude of activities they can enjoy in the mountains. In summer, depending on their age, children can go via ferrata, canyoning, rafting, summer tobogganing and archery. In between, take a trip to the playground to keep fit. The activities on offer are generally located in the heart of the resort. Family-friendly accommodation and activities

For those on a tighter budget, we suggest spending the night at a campsite. Chalet or mobile home, it's up to you to choose the accommodation that best suits your family. For your baby, our accommodation includes at least a cot, high chair and baby bath. A campsite or residence will be able to accommodate your baby without any worries. For a more upmarket family holiday in the mountains, we have residences where you'll find flats or even very plush self-contained chalets. These accommodations always have a kitchen and dining area where you can be independent so as not to add to the cost. What's more, summer accommodation prices are very affordable. For an itinerant trip in the Pyrenees, we also have a number of hotels where you can stay in a guesthouse.E^ Being mobile is the key to success when touring the Pyrenees, or you need to come back as a family each summer and do a different corner.
