The Ardèche department, a little paradise in France
The Ardèche is the envy of the whole of Europe, if not the whole world. This little paradise, wedged between the Rhône valley and even the Alps and the Massif Central, has in fact been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2014. To be more precise, it's the ornate Grotte du Pont-d'Arc, known as the Grotte Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc, which is listed, but it's the whole département that deserves your family visit!
The villages have been very well preserved in the Ardèche. Two of them are even among the most beautiful villages in France: these are the villages of Balazuc and Vogüé, but at Familytrip we find that most of the villages are little nuggets like the village Ruoms, Grospierre or Saint-Priest just outside Privas.
At Familytrip we don't promote overtourism in order to respect the places, the nature. In high season (July/August), we advise against going to Vallon Pont d'Arc, even if it's magnificent. We would advise you to go during the off-season, when everything is open but there are fewer tourists, such as during the spring and autumn holidays.
In the Ardèche, we're a long way from the sea but there's no shortage of river or lake beaches. As well as the Ardèche (which is also a river and the most popular, as it is home to the Gorges de l'Ardèche), there are other smaller rivers that are less well known but have a beach. These include the Volane, Sandron and Besorgues rivers. For those who don't like the current or who have a small baby, we recommend swimming at a beach overlooking a lake. These include the Lac de Coucouron and the Lac du Devesset. Of course we can offer you an estate with a water park, but these wild places in the heart of nature are idyllic settings for cooling off.
If we haven't yet convinced you to take a family holiday in the Ardèche, we can add gastronomy of course! Wine, of course, with the Ardèche hillsides to be consumed in moderation. Chestnuts are also used in sweet and savoury dishes. Charcuterie, blueberries and many other local products such as cheese (Saint Félicien of course) will make your mouth water...
Types of accommodation to rent at a campsite in the Ardèche department
Familytrip selects family campsites that offer accommodation suitable for people travelling with children. We list mobile homes, but also chalets, caravans, converted tents for a taste of old-fashioned camping and much more! We do not offer pitches. Pitches are reserved for those who have all the equipment. Please note the price. In fact, the price of a pitch is more attractive than a rental, but everything is extra: electricity, parking space... And if you're only going to use your tent once a year, it's better to rent it than buy it!
Campsite rentals have a smaller but optimised space. The aim is to spend as much time as possible in the heart of nature and not in the accommodation. If you're bored of the same old mobile home, you can opt for a chalet. For large families, a chalet can be small, as most stop at 4 or 6 people, as opposed to 8 for a mobile home. It's no more mobile than a mobile home, but it's warmer.
Familytrip selects a quality offer all over France in starred campsites ranging from 2 to 5 stars. In the Ardèche we have a majority of 3-star campsites where the value for money will be the best for this corner of France.
As you can see, the Ardèche is full (!) of activities for enjoying nature. We haven't listed them but to enjoy these gorges, rivers and lakes you can go canoeing, canyoning, hiking, swimming...
Equipment and services at campsites in the Ardèche
The campsites selected by Familytrip in the Ardèche are also packed (I'll stop) with on-site facilities and activities. As far as facilities are concerned, most campsites have at least a swimming pool, a playground, a reception where you can glean opinions and info on a good restaurant plan if the campsite doesn't already have a restaurant.
Some campsites in the Ardèche have a water park, and we also have a holiday village that has one for aficionados of the pentagliss and other wild rivers. These destinations are rather expensive in a popular département. To save money, our advice is to opt for a campsite with a traditional swimming pool but with a few water games, for example. Are your teenagers grumbling? Tell them about the savings they'll make on the rental, which will be reinvested in nearby activities!
Some campsites may have a spa or even a kids' club. This is an excellent combo for planning a little duo spa session while the kids are at the club. Most clubs are included in the price, so if you're looking for better value for money (and you don't use the club much) it's better not to choose a campsite with a kids' club. This is because the cost of the activity leaders is passed on to you in the rental price. Finally, if you don't want too much entertainment, you're better off visiting the surrounding area as much as possible. We advise you to check the mileage carefully before booking, as the bill for the petrol station could be high. The roads in the Ardèche are small and steep, so journeys can be long and winding. Ask our advisers for their advice, and they'll be able to tell you about paying car parks such as those at Vallon Pont d'Arc, and that it's better to choose another spot to visit the Ardèche gorges. In some cases, there's no miracle cure for going to a corner of paradise! Indeed, to visit the Chauvet cave, we know of no other way than to pay for parking...
