Le Château d'Oléron is a picturesque village on the south-east coast of the island of Oléron. This charming village is famous for its historical heritage, its seascapes and its oyster farming culture. The emblematic site of Château d'Oléron is its fort, built under Louis XIII and reinforced by Vauban in the 17th century. The fort overlooks the ocean and offers a breathtaking view of the Pertuis d'Oléron, the maritime channel that separates the island from the mainland. Now restored, the fort hosts exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year. The oyster-farming port, meanwhile, is a not-to-be-missed spot, colourfully decorated with oyster-farmers' huts, some of which have become workshops for craftsmen and designers. Château d'Oléron boasts several beaches with calm waters, ideal for family bathing and water sports such as kayaking, sailing and paddle boarding. Not far away, the wilder Vert Bois beach is appreciated for its waves and attracts surfing enthusiasts. The surrounding area also offers a diversity of landscapes, from dunes and salt marshes to pine forests, ideal for hiking and cycling along the island's many cycle paths.

Around Château d'Oléron, other remarkable sites are within easy reach. The Chassiron lighthouse, at the northern end of the island, offers a panoramic view of the ocean and coastline. Further inland, Saint-Pierre d'Oléron is a lively town with a rich heritage, and the surrounding villages, such as Dolus and Saint-Trojan, each offer relaxing beaches and forests.
